Latest Project: Whales for Charlie!

A friend approached me about rearranging her son's room. Charlie is going from a crib to a BIG BOY bed very soon (well, as soon as I am finished)- and she needed inspiration and some kick ass ideas for it. No stranger to thinking outside the box, this one has been tons of fun...the inspiration is everywhere- I mean we have Moby Dick, Lolita, and lately some really cute West Elm pillows designed by Lourdes Sanchez- haha! see below. Plus she had some adorable whale chalkboards from his baby room that I thought would be sweet to carry into his toddler years...

But, what I liked most about the whale "theme" is that aside from it being portrayed in an extremely playful way, it can also be very grown up. Like, the colors associated with a whale- navy (my favorite neutral), black, bluish greys...there is an element of the obvious sea without it being cliche. The trick here was to mix it with some raw and organic pieces like the nightstands, a little bit of industrial- man-boy at sea- the desk...and the whimsical of course- the prints. I am not quite finished, just a few more details- so for the time being, BIG BOY Charlie will have to do with his outgrown crib...but I promise it will be well worth it. Hope you like it buddy!

It seems there are some stores which just know how to make emotions churn and none do it better than Linda Fargo and David Hoey, the genius' at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. Assouline has recently published a new book titled: Windows at Bergdorf Goodman, chronicling years of AWESOME (an understatement) window displays...and my blog hero- Heather Clawson at Habitually Chic has posted some amazing pics from the book- link below to enjoy and marvel for yourself- oh yeah and book your trips to New York now- I heard their Christmas displays just came up and are out of this world!

Some of my fondest memories as a child have always been around this time of year- when the weather gets a little cooler, the nights arrive a little sooner, and there is a feeling in the air of celebration, peace and the importance of family. Growing up a Cuban-American, Thanksgiving was a very new Holiday for my parents and grandparents- I mean, not too long ago, my father would attempt to make a turkey (the "American Way") but as much as he tried, it somehow still tasted like the lechon (roasted pork) we would eat a month later on Noche Buena...perhaps we can blame it on the mojo. It wasn't until I grew up, that we began to embrace the traditions of this special Holiday. The essence was always there: love, family, gratefulness..but the customs- well, these were a little bit different. Instead of stuffing, we had arroz con frijoles, instead of sweet potatoe pie (which I must add has become my mother's specialty in the last few years)- we had yuca, and for dessert- no pumpkin pie or fruitcake for the (then) Perez Family- it was flan or a tres leches. Oh yes, and who can forget the Spanish Turrones (staying true to our roots), which somehow only became available at this time of year. Perhaps this is where I learned the importance of no matter how you celebrate the holidays, the important thing is to make it special and make it yours. Because the truth is- we're not so different after all, and we truly have so much to be grateful for!

In the next couple of days, I will share with you ways in which you can make this Thanksgiving Holiday special and uniquely yours.

There's a new kid in town...almost. CasaIdeas also known as Casa&Ideas will be opening soon in the SoMi town Center (aka Sunset Place). A company originating in Chile, now has over 31 locations in cities throughout Latin America. And they've chosen South Miami, as the flagship location for their arrival to the states.

They specialize in housewares- such as items for the kitchen, table, dining, bedspreads, gifts, and other decorative accessories. In fun, bright colors and authentic style.

Rumor has it, the best thing about them, is their ever changing inventory- so expect to see something new every time you go. And supposedly, their prices are great- think Ikea meets Crate and Barrel - (minus) furniture.

The construction seems to be almost through and not sure if they'll be ready in time for Christmas, but here are a few of the cute Holiday things I found online.

Style Trend: Terrazzo

What's old is new again, and someone once said it took more than a few decades for somethings to become a "classic"...well, I think we're just about ready for the return of Terrazzo. A popular flooring choice back in the 50's through 70's, especially in the coastal homes of Florida (where I'm from.)

A LITTLE HISTORY: The word "terrazzo" comes from the Italian word for terraces. In the 15th century, Venetian stone workers began using their waste chips, left over from marble slab processing. They mixed the chips with cement and laid the floors of the terraces around their living quarters. At first, the floors were uncomfortable to walk on. Improvements were made to the manufacturing of these floors, and by the 18th century, European craftsmen brought an advanced, smoother, more polished terrazzo to America.

Known for its versatility in pattern design, seamless appearance, and smooth finish- as well as its ease of maintenance nowadays, its a great choice for any home with the desire to create a flawless separation between indoor-outdoor living.

As you may or may not have noticed I have been making some changes, at home, at work (all to come a little later), but for now, here. A name change. Never did I imagine it would be this tough. Mulling over different configurations of "this or that"...it finally hit me. Sweet Domestic. "Sweet" being a play on the Allman Brothers Band's SWEET MELISSA and "Domestic" for the obvious and perhaps not so obvious reasons. Now those of you who know me personally know that I am a big big music lover; all genre's. And Bjork's DOMESTICA sealed it for me...I think its a beautiful interpretation of how the most mundane thing (like looking for your keys) can be so inhibiting, but also how a brilliant artist like Bjork found it compelling enough to write a song (and almost name her album) about it. Where was she going? What was she "too late" for? Either way, its the idea that we get so boggled down with our everyday "this and that's," we forget to see the beauty of the little things. "And its meaning lies in grounding ourselves, while keeping our heads in the clouds." I think for me, that's exactly what I want this blog to be about. Finding the beauty in the little things, dreaming up big things, and still staying grounded.

A NEW OBSESSION...happy, happy, me!

I spoke at length with my little sister yesterday, who seems to be wise beyond her years and she told me she checks this blog constantly to see what I am doing, thinking and feeling (she lives in San Francisco with her beautiful fiancee...too far from me). I was happy to hear that coming from her, although- I tell ya- she must be my one and only fan- Dreamka- thanks to u too. It made me a little sad to realize I had not updated this blog in such a long time. My schedule hasn't exactly been easy lately, I went back to work full time. I love my job, and am grateful to have one these days and so I am doing all I can to take care of it. And luckily for me, it allows me the opportunity to revolve myself around design albeit not the kind that truly moves me- but it's great. I work with wonderful people, have an amazing, supportive boss and truly enjoy what I do everyday.

That being said, I hadn't found much inspiration. Something that made me want to start "working" again...until that phone call which came yesterday afternoon on my way home from work. My friend, and most loyal client, Patty called me in hysteria and excitement that she had just discovered a store, she knew, I would absolutely love! I told her not to move that I would be there immediately. And she was right! A brand new store, called URBAN LOFT located by the warehouses off of bird and 72 avenue...the minute I walked in, it took my breath away. My taste exactly, fresh, funky, a mix of modern and traditional and all at affordable prices. Some pieces are one of a kind, some can be ordered and others completely customized- right down to fabric, size, and style. It is truly a unique place in Miami- I have been around to a lot of places in this town and yes, you can find all of it, but can you afford it? And do some of these stores, really inspire you? It was like walking in to a mix of someone's really cool house and an antique store. You know the ones you can spend hours in and every time you turn a corner, you find something you love, and you just have to have? Yeah like that...

Well, I think the best part of the entire story, was the shop owner's story. She had always loved design, had never gotten formal training, but had friends who would ask her to help them all the time...she always had something inside of her telling her this is what she wanted to do, but it took some years, and some confidence to finally DO IT! Her story resonated with me so much, and I am so proud of her and her accomplishments. Besides that, her husband who owns a fabric store across the way, was the first person to ever give me the time of day when I started as a designer "working" (and for that I will always be grateful). SO, it makes me even happier to see that he is so supportive of her and her gorgeous daughter's who also help mom out on their time off of school.

I can go on and on...and I promise I will once I get some photo's of the fabulous shop. And I don't know if it was the stuff, the story or the kind of days I've been having, but I felt like it moved me enough to write. Pats- thank u- I know we'll be doing some damage for years to come at UL, Sister, I promise to take you girls next time you're in MIA...and if there is anyone out there who is reading, please stop in and check it out for yourselves. I promise you won't be dissapointed...

...I saw this user name today as I was looking around and thought to myself- what a cool person to try to get to know. What could it be about her life that is so foggy? Her pic is adorable and her story must be so great. Clarity by definition means clearness of thought or style...how boring is that- to know exactly what you are and who you are at all times? I realized this morning that my son owns me...its interesting how different you are on your second kid. The boundary lines are blurred, the time outs are quicker, the patience is greater...poor Lucy- paying for all of my mistakes. Don't get me wrong, our relationship rocks! She is my best little buddy and the love of my life- the only one that gets my mood and respects it. And I am her everything...but I have always been so tough on her, she had to be the perfect baby, perfect toddler, and now perfect big sister. Why does that happen and does it ever end? I had an argument with my mom yesterday...it's been 32 yrs since we've been fighting like this and I can't seem to get used to it or accept it. Did I mention I was the first born, too. Is this how it will be for lulabird and me? Geez- I hope not.

My son, just asked me for one more cinnamon roll- he's got a plate full, but he wants another one. I obliged of course, cause- he owns me. Wondering if I would've had he been numero uno...probably not. Now, ain't that a b%tch.

BIRDS and BUTTERFLIES...a sweet baby shower

Just last week I had the priviledge of hosting my sister-in-law's first baby shower...a very special time in all of our lives as we await the arrival of Baby Natalia...I was inspired my Natalia's room which is decorated in the most gorgeous Tiffany Blue, and birdcages...I wanted it to be representative of Michy and her style. The fete was totally Mich- shabby chic with a hint of whimsy.

I hand made a lot of the decorations, the hanging wreaths, which are now in Natalia's room, the HOORAY BABY banner and the Dear Mommy note cards which looked incredible at the end of the night once they were all hung on the branches...sorry no pics of that. I wanted her to know how special she is and how much she is loved and thought of...

The bar looked adorable- even the champagne in my Bird Bath- turned- sink looked very much at home!

It was great to see her enjoying the company of her family and closest friends...we of course, had an after party and invited the boys to come- no sense in letting all that bubbly go to waste!

While perusing my favorite store (and those of many)- Anthropologie, I came across an interesting new design trend I have now seen in a couple different places. While I am not a fan of any sort of animal killing, especially that which is done for purposes of trophy...I am aware that in the right setting and with the right look, it could be really cool. Resolve to Revamp

Every New Year's Eve, a sense of sadness comes over me, a melancholy of the days past and the time wasted, but at that same moment a new sense of energy arises. A hope that this year will be different. I vow to make changes- I vow to get my life in order. I believe many of us feel this same way and so resolutions are our response to our procrastinations. And resolutions about getting your home into the best possible shape is an ever popular one.

Whether its decluttering, painting, retiling the bathroom, or organizing the hallway closet, we all know there is something our homes need and something we would be thrilled to see accomplished in them. SO here are some easy tips on how to resolve the home revamp- for sure, this time.

1. PRIORITIZE

Although you may in your mind, want to do all of it, you realistically know all of it, at one time, is not going to happen. Make a list as you walk around the house, look to see what needs to be done room by room and then pick the quickest and easiest fixes first. Organize the closets, it doesn't cost a whole lot of money, just some extra time. Then tackle the living room, then re-do the backyard. Make a list of everything...if your time and budget only allow for a couple of things at least you have a starting point the next time and you will feel so good about your accomplishments.

2. START SMALL

Tackling for example, the closet, is an easy, quick start...maybe a re-do of the kitchen is on your list, but you know before you can get all new cabinets put in, you're going to want to de-clutter the old ones. No sense in filling your brand new stuff with things you probably have never used. Get rid of old food or items that have been in these cabinets since the day you moved in (we all have them)! Then you can de-clutter the countertops, remove decorative items that have somehow become a part of the background and you don't even notice them anymore. Donate any appliances you don't use, or serving sets that are incomplete. These small changes make a big difference in how you will feel the next time you open up a drawer to get something out. Then think how easy the transfer will be once your new, gorgeous, updated kitchen comes in.

3. GIVE YOURSELF A DEADLINE

The most important part about this is step is to have a realistic one. Know that every major project will take about two more weeks or so than you alotted (mishaps, arrival of deliveries get delayed, workers may not show up when you expect them to, etc..), so plan that in. I don't know about you, but for me, I either have to get pregnant or throw a party to get anything done around here...it's definitely not because of me, but my hubby doesn't mind the yard looking like a mud pit, until someone has to sip a cocktail in it...So if that is your situation too, then go ahead- party on. Deadlines are important because not only does it keep you focused, but it gives you a timeframe and it holds you and others accountable for the work being done. In other cases, without one, a project you are undertaking may not get going til very well into next New Year's resolutions. What's the fun in that??

4. GET HELP

Now for most of us who are not DIY people, getting help is the best possible solution. Remember that at times, when you are trying to save money by doing it yourself, you end up spending more than you would've had you just hired a professional from the beginning. And of course, it depends on the project too. I am a big believer that much of what gets done around the house can be done by the people living in it- but when in doubt- DON'T...it may be a bigger disaster than you were prepared for.

She's Crafty

I have been a busy little bee in the last few months...no time for much else but work. Some time in early October I stumbled upon a hidden talent I had...bored of the same old, same...I felt an urge to create...this creativity then became a surprising Holiday business. I did not set out on making money, I just wanted to do something with my time that would keep me busy working in what I love to do. I made a couple Halloween and Fall wreaths, had a mini open house with some close friends, and before I knew it, I was attending Trunk Shows all through the end of 2009 as a vendor...how unbelievable is that? I realized a lot about myself during that time. One, I am a complete workaholic...getting up at all hours of the night to work, build, plan, organize...two, I love marketing and branding, I don't know what I enjoyed most about what I was doing, actually building the wreaths or tagging them and creating the packaging, the logos-heh.! Wrapping the items customers had bought was just as fun for me as actually creating WHAT they had bought. I loved the hecticness of time lines...I loved getting to the stores and being inspired by what I found and how I could turn that into something fun and unique. Best of all, the response I received was overwhelming. People were waiting to see what I would create next, and each one was a one of a kind, and at times inspiring work of art. (even if only for me, of course) It was the one thing I could do all on my own. I never realized I was so crafty...and while my dreams and aspirations have not changed, the last few months has given me a re-newed sense of confidence in my abilities to at least learn and try new things.

I bought myself a sewing machine- hahaha, who knows maybe I will actually learn to use it one day.

to-day in my life...

5am iphone rings..."what is that noise?" I say..."I think it's aliens landing from mars"my husbands whispers...no it's my very unusual Wednesday morning alarm. Wait, I'm not supposed to be meeting my trainer on Wednesdays I think to myself- oh yeah I forgot, Monday- too tired- cancelled. Tuesday- daughter too sick- cancelled...very confused.
5:15 am re-visit paperwork and Client presentation for 8 am meeting.
5:38 leave for the gym
5:45 am warm-up
6 am legs...what a killer...
6:30 treadmill
7:05 am head home
7:08 am call from my mentor congratulating me on the excellent and very thorough email I sent last night..."that is exactly what we needed- a break down of the Prices and lead times on the sofas so our Clients can make an informed decision."
7:09 "thank you" blah blah blah
7:12 "do you have the pictures of the sofa?"
7:13 "oh...shoot I hope so"
7:14 "what time will you be arriving she says?"
7:14 "well now that I have spent an additional 9 minutes talking to you about last night's email...I think around 8:09...will you be on time?" I asked.
"YES" she said.
7:25 review the excellent and thorough email on my handy iphone while I make coffee. PRINT PICTURES.
7:45 jump in the shower while I drink my coffee...
8:02 leave the house...I have 7 minutes to get there...
8:12 arrive at Clients house...broken light on US1.
8:15 meet with the painter
8:30 meet with the client
8: 31 introduce the painter to the client
8:50 finish meeting with the client, will speak to the painter later today...
9 am head home
9:14 pull up to the driveway
9:15 call from my mentor to discuss the meeting...can't understand a word she has barked at me..."where are you?" I say..."getting a pedicure," she responds..."wait for me and we can discuss this better in person"..."is it far?"
"NO" she says, "you've seen the gray building a million times, but it has no name and I do not know the address...are you on your way" she asks?...
9:18 head to the beauty parlor...gray building no name, no address...I hope I can find it...
9:22 I found it...I have been past this building a million times, and yes it was NOT FAR at all.
9:30 discuss the sofa options, english arm with t- cushion?, sock arm with straight cushion, waterfall skirt, turned bun leg, man I need a pedicure, 40" deep- good its deep, 68" deep- great its not so deep, 3 weeks to deliver, 45 business days to deliver, up-charge? definitely...bill time?- NO, look at my hands and think to myself a manicure wouldn't be so bad either...
9:55 "gotta go" she says..."email me what you have"...
10 head home
10:05 give my daughter a kiss on her forehead..."good morning!" give my son a kiss on his cheek..."good morning!"
10:20 call the manufacturer request another quote for sofa...english arm t- cushion, sock arm straight cushion, this vs. that, and that vs. this, and this with this vs. that with that...., the fabrics need a reserve, and some coordinates..."when will it arrive?"..."tomorrow-UPS"...great!
10:30 Man I'm hungry and tired
11 feed my son
11:14 write my mentor the email for what I have...nothing yet.
12:30pm make lunch
12:45 put the baby down for a nap
3 still nothing...really...
3:02 the painter hasn't returned my call
3:05 the client has called again...
3:15 baby wakes up, need to do some retail therapy...looking for a coffee table and dining table for my backyard
3:25 head to the stores...N Miami, Coral Gables, Coral Gables...nothing...oh wait Victoria's Armoire...perfect- everything...
6pm feed the baby dinner, feed Lucy dinner, skype with my sister on the camera while I feed the kids dinner
6:40 bathe the baby
7:10 put him down
7: 15 bathe Lucy
8 put her down
8:30 baby wakes up crying...making homemade mini burgers with goat cheese and purple onions...yum
9 eat dinner
10 realize I haven't written my mentor an email in several hours...
10:45 blog
11:15 realize I am too tired to open outlook...
11:17 shower, read my emails- nothing from her or the clients, just a proposal waiting for me in the fax...
11:18 set my alarm for 5 am so I can look over the proposal and send another excellent and thorough email coordinating all the details for the sofa before I head to the gym to meet my trainer...
11:19 can't remember...I think I passed out (literally) on my husband's chest (literally)!

Kevin turns one today, and at about the exact same time I am posting this blog, I was racing to the hospital with contractions 6 minutes apart and over 5 1/2 cm's dilated last year...so anxious to meet the new love in my life...I showered, put on make-up and even did my hair before leaving. I wanted to make a good impression on him. He was such a champ- pushed himself out into the world! 15 minutes and 3 pushes- that's all it took. And I must admit- it has always been that easy with him.

The year has gone in a blink- and all I can say is that he has made me a better person and a better mother. And he fills my life with a joy I have never experienced. Thank you my little man...mommy loves u and can't wait to give you your first piece of b-day cake later today!

The Slip Up. Part 1

I think I may have mentioned this before, but I am an interior decorator. Not to be confused with an interior designer which is, it seems, a very different title...not because of my lack of ambition, drive, style or vision...but because of my lack of a 4+ year degree in the field and overall technical knowledge. I realized soon after I made the decision to persue this career that there would be no way to successfully make it in this business on fabric and paint colors alone.

And so, I did my research, got some sort of certification, which in retrospect, for what I spent was not worth the investment and realized the only way I would truly learn was by working for someone, an interior designer. Seeing the ins and outs of the business and upping my brain power by disecting, every book, magazine, website and a VERY selective number of the ever popular Home Decorating shows...DRESS MY NEST and Thom Filicia, you are my hero's. I have researched Auto CAD (an architectural computer program that allows you to design room layouts with measurements and structural pieces), tried my hand at sketching and drawing, etc. A lot of the stuff I was already doing on my own as a hobby...

But now, if I was going to do it- for real. Then I would have to put in the effort- for real.

Two years ago, while shopping at a fabric store for a client...I hear a loud, raspy, yet restrained voice barking out at a woman who looked frantic. A lee jofa bag on one arm, a rolly cart filled with papers and fabrics and folders on the other. (I can't stress enough how frazzled this young lady seemed.) As if what we were all doing there was curing some awful disease on some sort of time limit...

I thought to myself, must be an interior designer...

...in Miami, at least, you can see them from a mile away. Polished, refined, oh so perfect, and all the bit "snooty" ...we (my family and I) even have a name for that type of attitude, which I might add is not reserved for just the designers, but for a lot of "beautiful" people in this beautiful city... "pipiri-schny" or "pipiri-" for short (sometimes "-schny" works depending on how you feel that day.) It's the chichi's of my time. Everybody knows one or two, and if you live in Miami they are everywhere, (pipiri's not designers)...please do not misunderstand, it is with a BIG hint of sarcasm that I say all of this. Depending on what you are referring to, it could mean a number of different things...oh yes, did I mention we are getting ready to have the word added to the dictionary?? along with a few others like "rents, yatches..." a blog for another time...it's like a phenomenon...

Ok,ok, ok... so back to "pipiri"... having a "pipiri" attitude is most definitely not a good thing...having "pipiri-shcny" taste, however could be, depending on whom you ask of course...a statement you made could have been "pipiri" which in most cases, especially if you are having it with your mother, is almost always a bad thing...going to a "pipiri" party usually means it was out of this world, literally. Are you starting to get it??? Go ahead use the word, you may have to explain it in the beginning, but it'll catch on...I promise.

How did I manage to ramble on about this??...I really just wanted to tell you my story...must be those cooky voices again, don't say I didn't warn you!

So I fell in love with this dress while perusing the blogspots I have been so lucky to come across. Thinking it embodies my spirit completely and must have it...yeah! Nothing really...

Not sure of what to write about today, so I think I will write about nothing really...was never very good at it. I majored in Chemistry for goodness sakes, that's how much I feared anything that had to be set on paper that required words, long sentences, proper grammar and spelling, uh just to think of those days makes me cringe...More likely than not, it is my ever racing mind that does not allow me to clear my thoughts and get them in some sort of order- "hip,hip" my husband would yell to me as if a fumbling soldier not able to get in line correctly. (He's not in the army or anything, but just likes to think he's in command- wink, wink). There are so many things I want to do... so many ideas I have...and not enough time or discipline to get them done.

So I am at a crossroads...do I write about my latest project and how I can't seem to make a decision on the color of the trellis' in the backyard- uh, boring??...or do I write about the argument I had with my mentor yesterday- uh, so not worth it...or do I write about the withdrawals I am going to have now since SYTYCD is over (at least for the next month anyways).

It's been a rough 24 hrs.

Wondering if the voices in my head (not the looney ones just the cooky ones) will shush up long enough to let me get something done today.

REVISITED...'08 was great...for parties!

2008 was a great year...and although I have posted these pictures before I thought it would be fun to include the thoughts and inspirations I had for these fabulous parties. Note to reader- all three were done with a very conservative budget. It goes to show you don't need money to make something look amazing, just some great ideas and some well worth it investments.

Mom turns FIFTY...

It enclosed a lounge area and welcomed all the guests with treasured moments from her life...

If you're gonna splurge on something, I tell my clients- it's gotta be the flowers. To me it's the most important element of any great and unforgettable party.

The CRAYOLA CRAYON Baby Shower

My friend Patty mother of two (now three) boys, while pregnant with her third had no idea what she was having...hoping for a girl, but accepting that it was probably gonna be another boy...we decided on this very neutral, very fun idea.

How yummy are those little feet...petit fours in chocolate, vanilla and guava flavor are courtesy of Cake Designs by Edda, Miami

The flowers looked amazing, very organic and very elegant...the guests were thrilled. My florist is amazing and very affordable. Landy's Flowers by Gerardo, Miami.

Don't forget to check out the homemade napkin rings...three crayons glued together and wrapped around a linen napkin with random and coordinating colorful ribbons...cheap and brilliant.

The BEST FRIEND baby shower

Talk about being on a major budget...this was the shower I through for my best friend and myself in June 2008...I had no money and tons of ideas (so what's new-right)...with the help of my mommy who had saved all of our baby clothes, and my dad who is my "Artistic Director/Handyman/EVERYTHING" we pulled off one of the cutest ideas I had seen in a while. I saw it a month later in an InSTYLE magazine..."toot, tooting my horn"

The centerpieces were mason jars that I got for about 1.00/ea and the runners were custom made teal/white seersucker with eyelet trim.

This centerpiece idea was inspired by my very brilliant, very economically-conscious and very stylish sister-in-law...I wrapped the boxes in vintage wrapping paper that I got online, and the books were bought at Z Gallerie and used as party favors...

It was a great night!
